While Brooke Fraser may be New Zealand’s hottest export, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, the Grammy Award-winning duo behind “Flight of the Conchords”, are undoubtedly one of it’s wackiest.
Describing themselves as “the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand”, their clever, off-the-wall lyrics, dry humor, and self-deprecating “kiwi-ness” have global appeal.
Their self-titled BBC radio show gained such popularity that they were signed up for a 12-part TV series with HBO. The series won them global recognition, as well as a larger fan base here in New Zealand. (Ironically, both TVNZ and RadioNZ initially rejected the duo, forcing them to seek recognition abroad)
Bite-sized facts about New Zealand’s Flight of the Conchords

- The duo were awarded “Wellingtonians of the Year, 2007“.
- Their album, “The Distant Future”, won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2007.
- Their official website hasn’t been updated since 2006. (Typical Kiwis. Lucy Lawless doesn’t have an “official” site either!)
