World Loves New Zealand’s Nuts (Flight of the Conchords)

While Brooke Fraser may be New Zealand’s hottest export, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, the Grammy Award-winning duo behind “Flight of the Conchords”, are undoubtedly one of it’s wackiest.

Describing themselves as “the almost award-winning fourth-most-popular folk duo in New Zealand”, their clever, off-the-wall lyrics, dry humor, and self-deprecating “kiwi-ness” have global appeal.

Their self-titled BBC radio show gained such popularity that they were signed up for a 12-part TV Series with HBO. The series won them global recognition, as well as a larger fan base here in New Zealand. (Ironically, both TVNZ and RadioNZ initially rejected the duo, forcing them to seek recognition abroad)

Bite-sized facts about New Zealand’s Flight of the Conchords

  • Bret McKenzie played a minor role as “FigWit” in Lord Of The Rings 1 and 3.
  • The duo were awarded “Wellingtonians of the Year, 2007“.
  • Their album, “The Distant Future”, won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2007.
  • Their official website hasn’t been updated since 2006. (Typical Kiwis. Lucy Lawless doesn’t have an “official” site either!)

  1. Lucy Lawless _does_ have an official site. It’s:
    http://www.lucylawlessfanclub.com

  2. Oh.. I thought that was the official fanclub site? (In the same way that, for example, Metallica has an official site, as well as an official fanclub)

I’m happy to be corrected, and I admire an artist who’s so into her fans that her fanclub site IS her official web presence.

  3. My brother and I did “I’m not crying” “business time” and “Jenny” the other day at a talent show type thing. I personally think “Jenny” is the best song ever written!

  4. ….. brooke isn't nearly as hot as foc.

  5. Err.. pardon my kiwi-naivety, but what's a foc? :)

  6. flight of conchords

  7. LOL - I guess hotness is in the eye of the beholder ;)

  8. uh, sorry?
