You have to wonder who came up with the official slogan “Wild At Heart“, for what is reputed to be one of the world’s toughest runways to land a plane on…
Kiwis will tell you a lot about the perils and thrills of landing at the Wellington airport.
Because of its short runway, and exposure to frequent winds, landings can be bumpy, hair-raising, and “exciting”…
Nevertheless, there have been very few safety incidents at the airport, according to Wikipedia.
I’ve only taken off and landed at Wellington airport only once, but in both cases, the weather was fine, and the flight was smooth.
The limitations of the runway mean that unfortunately the only “International” flights that Wellington International Airport is able to accommodate, are those to destinations in Australia and the Pacific.
Facts about Wellington Airport, New Zealand
- The film industry is booming to such a degree that alongside “Airport Charges” and “Safety and Security”, their website has a “Filming Charges” section.
- To promote the world premier of Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King, a statue of Gollum (and the Ring) was erected on top of the terminal. It’s not there anymore
How bad are the landings at Wellington Airport?
Aren’t you glad those pilots can fly?
